What is oral rehabilitation?

Oral rehabilitation is a specialty area of dentistry that focuses on the rehabilitation and restoration of the entire mouth, including the teeth, gums and jaws, through a carefully planned sequence of treatments based on each patient’s unique needs.

How can oral rehabilitation help me manage my TMJ?

TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorder, is a condition that occurs when the jaws don’t line up properly, resulting in symptoms such as clicking noises when chewing, a locking sensation when yawning, jaw pain, chronic headache, and grinding or clenching habits. Most TMJ cases are caused by uneven forces on the jaw joints that occur when the bite is not properly aligned. Oral rehabilitation helps rebalance the bite pattern by replacing missing teeth, aligning teeth or other methods so jaws and joints are stabilized and symptoms are relieved.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are an important part of oral rehabilitation, replacing lost teeth with prosthetic teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Implants comprise a metal post that is implanted in the jaw bone to serve as a root. Once the post fuses with the bone – a process that can take three months or more – an abutment is attached to the post, and an impression is made of the space so a crown can be manufactured to fit. Once the crown is ready, it’s fitted onto the abutment, where it will provide years of use. Dental implants are a much more comfortable, natural-feeling alternative to dentures and bridges, and they’re as easy to care for as your natural teeth.
